Customers of the Beatrice West Water System were told Wednesday to boil water used for drinking and cooking after a line break caused the system to lose total pressure.

The Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District, which manages the system, said repairs to the leak were underway. Customers may experience reduced water pressure while crews work on the problem.

Instructions for customers

Until testing confirms that the water supply is free of bacteria, customers should either boil water for one minute before drinking or cooking with it or use water from an alternative source.

  • Boil water used for drinking and cooking for one minute.
  • Use an alternative water source instead of boiling water.
  • Continue following the notice until testing confirms the water is safe.

The pressure loss followed a break in a water line. A loss of pressure can affect the system's ability to maintain normal water service, and the district is continuing to test the supply as repairs proceed.

The Beatrice West Water System is working with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Drinking Water Program during the response. The testing is intended to confirm whether bacteria are present in the system before the notice is lifted.

The affected system serves customers in the Beatrice area. The district said customers should continue to use boiled or alternative water for drinking and cooking while the repair and testing work continues.
