Republican Brinker Harding and Democrat Denise Powell used the final Sunday before Election Day to mobilize supporters in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, a race that will determine who succeeds U.S. Rep. Don Bacon.

Harding appeared Sunday afternoon at a Republican gathering in Elkhorn, where several candidates discussed the midterm election and their policy positions. He used the event to urge Republican voters to continue working through the final days of the campaign.

“And we’ve got two more days to continue that sprint. And we’re going to rush through that finish tape. And we’re going to make sure that CD2 stays red,” Harding said.

Other speakers at the Elkhorn event included Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers and U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts. The gathering was part of the Republican effort to encourage supporters to cast ballots before the election deadline.

Powell campaigns in South Omaha

Powell spent Sunday knocking on doors in South Omaha with campaign volunteers. Her campaign said it organized eight canvassing events during the day as it sought to reach voters before polls close.

Powell said voters she met were discussing the cost of daily necessities and concerns about national and local conditions. She identified groceries, gas, housing and health care among the subjects raised during the door-to-door conversations.

“They’re frustrated by what’s going on in the world. They’re struggling. And it’s the same conversations about groceries and gas and housing and healthcare. But they also understand that we’ve got an opportunity to sort of change in the direction of things,” Powell said.

The candidates’ final campaign activities come with one full day remaining before Nebraska voters decide the race on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Harding’s remarks focused on maintaining Republican control of the district, while Powell’s canvassing operation centered on conversations with voters and encouraging them to participate.

Powell said voters were tired of campaign advertising, mail and text messages. She urged them to make a plan for voting and said her campaign would continue knocking on doors through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

  • Brinker Harding is the Republican candidate seeking to replace Don Bacon in the U.S. House.
